Italian Seasoned Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes.

The quintessential side dish for holiday gatherings and to soak up delicious sauces like homemade gravy, the juice from boiled cabbage, or to just mash all the food on your plate together into for one large bite.

Did you know that most boxed “mashed potatoes” contain potato flakes, preservatives, fillers, and genetically modified ingredients; not to mention the other ingredients you have no idea how to pronounce?

Why mess up this perfectly delicious side dish using the boxed version when it’s so easy to make a homemade version?

Using real ingredients like organic potatoes, and real cream, butter, milk, sour cream adds the creaminess factor we all love about a good plate of mashed potatoes. Add in some fresh garlic, unrefined sea salt, Italian Seasoning and you’ve got yourself homemade mashed potatoes that will knock the socks off ANY boxed version you buy.

Side note: Potatoes should always be purchased organic because of how many chemicals are used on them — plus, conventional potatoes have the potential to be genetically modified!

When using whole, nourishing fats (seriously, ditch the low-fat/non-fat versions!) like real cream, butter, milk, and sour cream, it keeps you much fuller and you don’t necessarily have to take an additional heaping portion to feel content. I mean you totally could — no one is judging here — but usually it’s not necessary. You can learn more about healthy fats here, by the way.

The best thing about homemade mashed potatoes is you can adjust it to YOUR liking. Add more sour cream if it’s lacking the creaminess you desire. If it’s too dry, a little more milk or cream will do. If you like your mashed potatoes heavily seasoned, double up on my Naturally Free Italian Seasoning — if not, only put a little.

You have total control and to me, that is the best thing about making these Italian Seasoned mashed potatoes!

Author:
Ingredients
  • 2 lbs organic yukon gold potatoes, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp unrefined sea salt
  • water
  • 5 Tbl full-fat butter
  • ¼ cup full-fat cream; add more as you go if needed
  • ½ cup whole milk; add more as you go if needed
  • 3 Tbl full-fat sour cream; add more as you go if needed
  • 1½ tsp Naturally Free Italian Seasoning (get it here)
  • unrefined sea salt, to taste
Instructions
  1. In a large pot, add chopped potatoes, minced garlic, sea salt, and enough water to cover the top of the potatoes.
  2. Turn the heat on medium-high and bring to a boil; boil potatoes until tender (8-10 minutes)
  3. Drain potatoes in a colander; turn off heat; add potatoes back into pot
  4. Add butter and mash with a potato masher until melted
  5. Next, add cream, sour cream, and milk; mash to combine
  6. At this point, you test your potatoes and see if they are the right consistency. If too dry, consider adding more milk. If it doesn't taste creamy enough, consider adding more sour cream.
  7. Once the consistency is right, add Naturally Free Italian Seasoning and sea salt; mix with a wooden spoon to combine.
  8. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed
